📜 The Legends

Dogecoin: the joke that outlived the jokers

Dogecoin was created in 2013 as a literal joke — two engineers slapped a shiba meme on a Bitcoin fork to laugh at crypto mania. One of them later said he made it in an afternoon. No roadmap, no utility promises, no whitepaper worth reading. It should have died in a month.

Instead the community made it immortal. Doge tipped strangers online, funded a NASCAR car, sent the Jamaican bobsled team to the Olympics. The joke WAS the utility: it was fun to be there, so people stayed. Eight years later that culture collided with the 2021 mania and a certain billionaire's tweets, and the coin ran from fractions of a cent to roughly 74 cents — peaking almost exactly the night he hosted SNL. The most-watched hype moment in memecoin history was, on the chart, the top.

Doge then dropped around 90% over the following year — and still refused to die, still a top coin a decade after being an afternoon joke. Both halves are the legend: culture outlives every hype cycle, and the loudest moment of belief was the exact worst moment to buy in. Memes survive on culture. Nobody survives on promises.
